Thumbprint ATMs: Stupid Idea?

Apparently Citibank is rolling out a network of ATMs that use thumbprints instead of PINs. Their claim is that they are making ATMs more accessible to illiterate people. Voiceprompts and color coded instructions have also been included to make it easy to use.

I am not convinced that this ATM is actually serving a real need. I doubt illiterate people are so stupid that they cannot remember a sequence of four magic keypresses. They have to deal with so much written matter (voter ID cards, ration cards) and rudimentary mathematics already (counting change after paying for stuff).

If they make ATMs easy to use, the voiceprompts and color-coded instructions should be ported to “regular” ATMs too. :)
